Our firm's
concentration in the nonprofit organization field
includes the tax and corporate law needs of public
charities, private foundations, and charitable trusts.
We represent a number of large and small nonprofit
organizations, and we have never had an application
for exemption or request for letter ruling turned
down by the Internal Revenue Service. Our attorneys
in this field include Wendell R. Bird, Jonathan T. McCants, and Martín Muñoz.
Wendell R. Bird
wrote the "Religious Organizations" chapter
of the leading treatise on exempt organization law (Federal
and State Taxation of Exempt Organizations
published by Warren Gorham & Lamont), as well as
other published articles listed below. He is a
plenary speaker each year at the leading national
conference on nonprofit organizations (the Washington
Non-Profit Tax Conference), where he has spoken for
over 25 years. He is the co-chair of the American Bar
Association Subcommittee on Charitable Contributions, and also has
been the chair of the
ABA Subcommittee on Religious Organizations, and of
the ABA Subcommittee on State and Local Taxation.
He has served on the Board of Advisors of New York
University Law School's National Center on
Philanthropy and Law, and the Board of Advisors of
Taxation of Exempts and Taxation of Exempt Organizations. On
request by the publishers, Wendell Bird wrote a
chapter on exempt organization tax law for one of the
four national tax looseleaf services (CCH's
Federal Tax Service, a 25 vol. series) (with Russell Reach), and
wrote a guide for accountants on tax law governing religious organizations for Taxation
for Accountants (with Thomas Kotouc). He has
published a dozen other articles on nonprofit
organization law in Taxation of Exempts, Journal of
Taxation of Exempt Organizations, Practical Tax Lawyer, Tax-Exempt
Organizations, etc.
Jonathan T. McCants and Martín Muñoz concentrate
in the nonprofit organizations area. Jonathan McCants
has published an article in Taxation of Exempts on "The
Treasury's Revised Guidelines on International Grant Making", and
writes the "Religious Organizations" column for Taxation of
Exempts.
Our firm represents hundreds of charities and
foundations nationwide with local attorneys as
appropriate.
